Fine Lines, Wrinkles and Facial Volume Loss

The first fine lines and wrinkles tend to appear on a person’s face in areas where the skin naturally folds during facial expressions. They develop due to the skin becoming thinner and less elastic over time.

Wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process. As people get older, their skin becomes thinner, drier, and less elastic, which means it is less able to protect itself from damage. This leads to wrinkles, creases, and lines on the skin. Facial expressions, such as smiling, frowning, or squinting, lead to the development of fine lines and wrinkles at a young age. These lines deepen as the person gets older.

Many factors affect the development of wrinkles, including: sun exposure, smoking, dehydration, some medications environmental and genetic factors, Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from sunbathing, tanning booths, and outdoor sports increases the development of wrinkles.

UV light breaks down the collagen and elastin fibers in the skin. These fibers form the connective tissue that supports the skin. As this layer breaks down, the skin becomes weaker and less flexible. The skin starts to droop, and wrinkles appear.

Facial Volume Loss

As we age, our skin’s collagen and elastin tend to decrease, leading to volume loss in face key areas such as cheekbones, the under-eye area and cheeks. It can also make certain areas look heavier, such as the jowls and neck, which can lead to sagging skin and may sometimes alter the structure and shape of our whole face. Lost volume in face, especially when paired with increased fat pads lower in the face and neck, is a common factor of ageing.  The three main face volume loss causes are hormonal changes, environmental factors, and extreme diet and exercise. Our skeleton shrinks too as we age, as a result the soft tissues like our skin and fat pads have less to hold on to hence leading to wrinkles and facial volume loss.

In terms of hormonal changes as face volume loss causes, this is because they affect the quality and location of fat produced in the face. What’s more, along with volume loss in face, the amount of collagen in our skin cells naturally begins to reduce, and we stop producing as much hyaluronic acid to keep our skin moist. These factors together may result in drier, thinner skin that might no longer hold itself up at optimum plumpness.

While hormonal changes are a natural, unavoidable part of life, you’ll be glad to know that you can better control the other factors that affect volume loss in face structure. Stress, UV damage, pollution, smoking cigarettes, yo-yo dieting and extreme high-impact exercise are all face volume loss causes that can be avoided through lifestyle changes.

Treatments

Botox

Let’s talk about Botox for treating fine lines and wrinkles. I target only the small, specific muscles responsible for unwanted lines and wrinkles, refreshing your appearance. Administered correctly, they can subtly smooth and soften the skin, restoring a youthful complexion.  It can be use it to enhance positive expression, and decrease negative expressions in the face. I believe good treatment is undetectable - you don't have to look frozen or odd, you just look fab for your age. In the hands of a skilled injector, Botox can be used anywhere in the face. In general, there are certain areas where Botox will work better and others where dermal fillers will work better.

Chemical peels

Medical Skin Peels are a recognised treatment for fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation. It is a very quick and effective way to get rid of dull skin to reveal a glowing skin. Although there are noticeable changes seen after just one peel, repeated courses are recommended to achieve optimal results.

Dermal fillers

Dermal Fillers are popular treatments used restore lost volume and soften wrinkles caused naturally by ageing. Small injections of gel, typically made up of hylauronic acid, fill in wrinkles and add volume to soft tissue. You can have dermal fillers in different parts of your face: around the eye, cheeks, mouth and jawline, as well as lip fillers administered directly into the lip tissue. Fillers restore lost volume to your face and plump areas, so that deep-set lines are smoothed. I always say to my patients that facial enhancement is a journey and treatment plans are always evolving according to needs and budget.
