Hyperpigmentation and Melasma..What to do? Obagi-Nuderm to the rescue!

Many patients attend the Medished suffering from hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation is actually a symptom rather than a diagnosis. Hence, establishing the correct diagnosis is essential. One reason for hyperpigmentation is Melasma. Melasma is a complex, chronic skin disorder where sun exposure causes patches of pigmentation in the presence of other factors. These factors include hormones, medical conditions, pregnancy, or medication. During pregnancy, melasma is referred to as the mask of pregnancy or chloasma. Unfortunately, it may remain after the birth. Melasma may start with hormonal contraceptives but not reversed once discontinued. Anyone can develop hyperpigmentation and any point in their life.

WHAT DOES MELASMA LOOK LIKE?

The pattern of pigment is often larger patches in a symmetrical distribution. Melasma appears darker than the surrounding skin- affecting the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, nose and chin. It can also affect other areas of the body exposed to the sun, such as the forearms and neck. Areas of melasma are flat, not raised. Many patients have an ongoing battle with unevenly pigmented skin often worsening in the summer months.

WHAT PRODUCTS CAN HELP?

Obagi Nu-Derm is the number one skin care system for ageing or pigmented skin. This anti-ageing collection brightens and evens skin tone for a radiant, youthful-looking complexion.

Obagi Nu-Derm System is clinically proven to:

  • Reduce moderate to severe melasma, hyperpigmentation, age spots, and sun spots

  • Smooth rough and uneven skin

  • Tighten lax and sagging skin

  • Diminish fine lines and wrinkles

Most patients start to see improvements within the first six weeks. According to clinical studies, 94% of patients were satisfied with the overall effectiveness of the Obagi NuDerm System plus Vitamin A (tretinoin) at 24 weeks.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND OBAGI NU-DERM

Obagi Nu-Derm transforms the skin by increasing skin cell turnover and exfoliating dull, dead skin cells. This process occurs in five phases. Each phase lasts one to several weeks, depending on your skin type.

By the end of the first phase, more even-toned, rejuvenated skin will be revealed as older cells are sloughed away. Significant results should be noticeable within 8-12 weeks of beginning the Obagi Nu-Derm system.

So let's talk through the stages!

PHASE ONE: REMOVE

During the first six weeks of treatment, Obagi Nu-Derm’s proprietary ingredients work to improve skin cell turnover by exfoliating the dulled, dead cells of the top layer of skin.

Mild to moderate side effects are normal during the first six weeks of treatment. Common side effects of Obagi Nu-Derm include itching, redness, and dryness. I'm always available to help, guide and reassure you during this phase.

PHASE TWO: RESTART

Between the 7th and 12th week of treatment, new skin cells are produced. Skin tone will improve as pigment cells evenly distribute melanin throughout the fresh, rejuvenated layer of skin.

PHASE THREE: REFRESH

During the thirteenth to eighteenth weeks of treatment, Obagi Nu-Derm’s products continue to promote skin cell turnover. Hyperpigmentation will be reduced. Skin will look younger, with a more firm and hydrated appearance.

PHASE FOUR: RESTORE

Beyond the 18th week, skin will continue to improve. Skin is resilient, healthy-looking, and evenly toned.

PHASE FIVE: RETAIN

Now its all about maintaining your new skin! I will personalise a maintenance protocol just for you!

SO HOW DO I USE THE OBAGI NU-DERM SYSTEM?

For best results, follow these steps twice daily.

Step One: Cleanse AM/PM

Wash skin using Obagi Nu-Derm Gentle Cleanser (for dry skin) or Obagi Nu-Derm Foaming Gel (for oily skin). Apply a small amount to hands and massage onto wet skin, starting from the outside of the face and working inwards. Allow to sit for 30 seconds to open up pores, readying the skin for further product. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry.

Step Two: Tone AM/PM

Apply toner to cleansed skin using a cotton ball. Do not rinse off.

Step Three: Clear AM/PM

Apply 1 or 2 pea-size drops of Obagi Nu-Derm Clear onto face, extending to the hairline and ears.

Step Four: Exfoliate AM

Using fingertips, massage 1 to 2 pea-size drops of Exfoderm (for dry skin) into skin.

Step Five: Blender PM

Apply 1 or 2 pea-size drops of Obagi Nu-Derm Blender mixed with tretinoin onto your skin.

Step Six: Moisturise AM/PM

Smooth a small amount of Obagi Nu-Derm Hydrate over the entire face.

Step Seven: Protect AM

Liberally apply your SPF 50 onto your skin in the morning, underneath makeup.

OBAGI NU-DERM USAGE - MEDISHED TIPS!

During application, use ½ gram of each product. This roughly translates to the size of a pea.

The Obagi Nu-Derm system contains alpha hydroxy acid, or AHA. AHA can increase skin’s sensitivity to the sun. For this reason, it’s important to practice proper suncare techniques while using the Obagi Nu-Derm system. Always wear a sunblock and protective clothing, and avoid sun exposure between the hours of 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, when UV rays are their strongest. Redness, dryness, and itchiness may occur within the first six weeks of treatment. These side effects are completely normal and I'm always available to guide and help you.

In conclusion, the Obagi Nu-Derm is an incredibly effective skincare system, visibly reducing hyperpigmentation and signs of ageing. Begin your treatment today via The Medished for a rejuvenated, even-toned, and youthful complexion!
