Hi everyone! Welcome to the ultimate guide on navigating the winding road of anti-ageing advice! It's a journey filled with myths, miracles, and marketing ploys, all promising the secret to eternal youth. But before you spend another pound or slather on another cream, let's get down to the nitty-gritty of what truly works for your skin. So, save this blog!! and let's debunk some of the most common skincare and myths while embracing the natural process of ageing with grace and confidence. It's time to empower yourself with knowledge and love the skin you're in, every beautifully earned line of it!

Myth #1: Genetics Determine Your Wrinkle Fate

Despite what you might have heard, your wrinkle destiny isn't written in stone, or should I say, in your DNA. The sun plays a much bigger role. Did you know that up to 90% of visible skin changes attributed to ageing are actually caused by sun damage, not the number of birthdays you've celebrated? That's right, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, those UV rays are the real culprits behind the fine lines and wrinkles we often associate with getting older. don't worry, there's plenty you can do to protect your skin.

Preventative Measures Beyond Genetics

The earlier you start with preventative measures, the better. A good SPF is your best friend, and when it comes to skin care, consistency is your faithful companion. Remember, it's never too late or early to start taking care of your skin!

Myth #2: The Quest for the Perfect Anti-Ageing Routine

Personalising Your Skincare Approach

There's no magic formula or one-size-fits-all when it comes to skin care. Your skin is as unique as you are, and finding the right routine takes a consultation with an expert (me!) and giving the routine enough time to work... being patient so around 6/8weeks to see some changes. Consistency is key.

Using Key Ingredients for an Effective Anti-Ageing Strategy

When you're scouting for products, look for the heavy-hitters: retinols, retinoids antioxidants, and peptides. These are the ingredients that have stood the test of time and science, and they're the building blocks of any solid anti-ageing strategy. I'm always available to prescribe you a routine bespoke to you.

Myth #3: High Cost Equals High Efficacy in Skincare

The reality of skincare product pricing - expensive doesn't always mean better. In fact, some of the most effective products are also the most budget-friendly. You also may also need only 2 or 3 products to reach your aesthetics goals... It's all about the ingredients, the formulation and how you use them... not the price tag. When I prescribe a medical grade skincare regime..it may seem more expensive initially but the products will last longer and will be targeted to actually make a difference... so money well spent in my opinion.

Myth #4: Pores open and close

Pores do not open and close on their own; however, their size can fluctuate. Pores are naturally very small, almost invisible to the naked eye. But, when they are clogged with a mixture of oil and dead skin cells, they give the appearance of being bigger.

Cleaning to remove excess oil and debris with the absolute proper hydration can give the appearance of them being smaller.

Myth #5: The Skin gets used to products and stops responding to them

People often mistakenly believe that their skincare stops working as their complexion gets used to it - but this isn't true. Your skin doesn't get used to certain products and just stop working. Instead, your skin is probably just trying to tell you it needs something else. It's always a good idea to review your skincare seasonally roughly every 3/4 months.

Often, the staples stay the same, but you may need a new product or additional active ingredients to treat a certain issue.

Myth #6: I don't peel after a peel, it hasn't worked

Peeling is simply a side effect from a peel- not the goal or a guarantee, despite the name. There will always be microscopic shedding and renewal on a cellular level, regardless if you can physically see it. Light or deep, peels work magic. The object of a chemical peel is to accelerate the natural process of exfoliation which promotes skin rejuvenation.

Chemical peels can be stand alone… or even better in combination with others treatments.

Myth #7: People with oily skin don't need to moisturise

All skin types, including oily skin, require proper hydration and moisture. Majority of the time when people think their skin is oily, it's actually dehydrated due to lack of improper care and products. Therefore, their skin starts to produce more oil in effort to replace the natural oils being taken out. Using a moisturiser along with proper skincare products tailored to your skin helps regulate oil production, preventing it from going into overdrive to compensate for dehydration.... so people with oily skin need to moisturise, using a light non-comedogenic moisturiser containing hyaluronic acid, for instance.

Myth #7: Clean beauty guarantees a product that is safe and natural.

Nowhere in the world is there a regulated definition of what "clean beauty" means so anyone can use their own definition. Good skincare is about a smart combination of ingredients that are safe and effective. The truth is far more complex than simply believing everything natural is good and anything chemical is bad. Synthetic ingredients can be completely safe, effective, and sustainable, while natural ingredients can be harmful, ineffective, and unsustainable. Whether labelled as "clean beauty" or similar, what matters most is that every skincare product you use contains the most beneficial blend of non-irritating, natural ingredients, along with a smart selection of safe and effective synthetic ingredients.

Myth #8: Sunscreen is Only for Sunny Days

The Importance of Daily Sun Protection. Sunscreen is your skin's knight in shining armour, and it should be worn daily, regardless of the weather. UV rays can penetrate through clouds and windows, so make it a habit to protect your skin every day.

Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen and Antioxidants for Enhanced Defence

Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that's chock-full of antioxidants for an extra layer of protection. These formulations not only shield you from the sun but also from other environmental aggressors like pollution and blue light (screens!).

Embracing Natural Ageing While Caring for Your Skin

Realistic Expectations and Confidence in Your Skin. Wrinkles are normal - a sign of a life well-lived, and while it's great to take care of your skin, it's also important to embrace the natural changes that come with time.

Lifestyle Choices That Complement Your Skincare Routine

A holistic approach to anti-ageing skin includes a balanced diet, plenty of water, and adequate sleep. These lifestyle choices can have a profound impact on your skin's health, working in tandem with your skincare routine to keep you looking and feeling fabulous.

CONCLUSION

So we've uncovered the truth behind those anti-ageing tales and discovered that while genetics play a role, they're not the sole directors of our skin's destiny. We've learned that the sun is the main artist behind the canvas of our ageing skin, and that protection from its rays is paramount.....and about the whole "keep a poker face to avoid wrinkles" - total nonsense! Let's not take life too seriously! Smiling and expressing ourselves is what makes life rich and, in the grand scheme of things, contributes minimally to those character lines!! A balanced lifestyle, complete with a tailored skin care routine, plenty of hydration, and adequate rest, will keep your skin at its best.

Hello! today I'm going to answer a common question that I get in clinic which regards to differences and choice of our two popular injectable skin treatments Profhilo and polynucleotide Ameela. We can unleash your best skin using both products... but lets look at each product in detail to help you make an informed choice for your skin.

Tell me about Profhilo!

Profhilo, coined the injectable moisturiser by the press has been the go-to choice as a hydrating skin treatment. Profhilo contains the highest concentration of pure hyaluronic acid and has the ability to hold onto 1000 times its weight in water. With its hyaluronic acid formula, it provides deep hydration, stimulates collagen and elastin, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and enhances skin firmness, resulting in well-moisturised looking and feeling skin.

This is what gives your skin that dewy look after treatment. There are 10 injections placed in the face using the BAP (bio aesthetic points) that might cause temporary bee sting-like lumps near the injection sites, lasting no more than 24 hours. Profhilo remains effective in the skin for approximately 28 days and is most beneficial for individuals aged 30 and above. Visible results from Profhilo treatment become apparent within a few weeks. Typically, two to three treatments, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, are recommended. We can treat anywhere on the body apart from the forehead and under-eye areas. The aesthetic improvements can last for about 4 months before a top-up is needed. Listen below for a summary of PROFHILO!

Tell me about Polynucleotide Ameela!

So Ameela (polynucleotide) is the new regenerative treatment that the world of aesthetic medicine is talking about. Polynucleotides are made up of nucleotides which are the building blocks of RNA and DNA. They are an innovative and effective way to restore your skins elasticity, firmness and health. They harness their regenerative super powers from salmon fish DNA (I know...crazy!- so if your vegan this treatment is not for you). They improve skin texture, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and enhance skin quality and elasticity by creating an optimum habitat for your skin's fibroblasts to thrive. These fibroblasts then work their magic by producing collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, leaving your skin luxuriously plump, beautifully rejuvenated, and radiating a captivating, luminous glow.

Ameela acts as a protector for your skin and extends the life of hyaluronic acid by up to 40% through its anti-free radical effect, keeping your skin super hydrated for longer. Ameela interacts with cell receptors, causing various cellular responses. This primarily attracts stem cells, facilitating tissue repair, encouraging new capillary formation, and altering tissue structure for immediate tightening and contouring.

If pigmentation and an uneven skin tone is your concern then Ameela can assist in reducing hyperpigmentation and improving your skin tone. They work by regulating melanin production (melanocyte cells) which are responsible for pigmentation in the skin.

If you suffer with rosacea, then Ameela might be the treatment for you. It has anti-inflammatory properties that can help calm and soothe your skin and reduce redness associated with rosacea. As it stimulates collagen production it can strengthen your skin's barrier and improve its ability to heal. Additionally they can improve the overall condition of your skin, making it less prone to flare-ups and promoting a more even complexion. Ameela is available in three different strengths, one of which is suitable for the under-eye area. Polynucleotides are often favored for certain areas as it does not cause water retention like hyaluronic acid. In the under-eye area, polynucleotides can help improve skin strength, dark circles and integrity instead of tear trough treatment with dermal fillers which tend to come with a higher complication rate.

Ameela treatments tend to outlast Profhilo - hence slightly more expensive, with effectiveness extending up to 6 months in the skin. Immediate, results are visible, especially under the eyes. Typically, two to three treatments, 2-4 weeks apart, are recommended, with aesthetic improvements lasting 6 months before a top-up is required.

Polynucleotides stimulate regeneration of the skin at a cellular level and they also offer anti-inflammatory and wound-healing benefits, making them suitable for conditions like acne, pigmentation, rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis. So in conclusion Polynucleotides get your skin glowing from the inside out. Listen below for a summary of AMEELA -previously called Nucleadyn before rebrand!

Tell me .. Is one better than another?

I'm going to be honest... Ameela does emerge as a skin treatment with extraordinary regenerative potential offering a holistic and powerful solution for a variety of skin conditions. Having said that nothing beats the glow that Profhilo gives along with its biostimulating benefits however Profhilo can't be used under the eyes unlike Ameela which can. Both products have an excellent safety profile and evidence based. Many of my patients who have these skin treatments regularly have aged beautifully - we will all age! but how we choose to do so is up to the individual. My job is to keep you looking natural and the best version of yourself. So I'm afraid that the jury is out here at The Medished...if money was no object I'd have Ameela and Profhilo treatments staggered over a year treatment plan! But I know life doesn't normally work like that - so a consultation is key with me to work out what's best for your face, your treatment goals and your budget:)
